FIND THE RIGHT MARTIAL ART FOR YOU

The martial arts journey is one that may well change your life. If you last longer than a few months, martial arts often has a profound impact on both your physical and mental health.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu – Not to be confused with its traditional Japanese counterpart (Usually spelled JU Jitsu). Jiu Jitsu or BJJ is a grappling martial art which in the modern era can use either a gi or no gi. It almost exclusively deals with ground fighting.

BJJ is a martial art suited to any age group but less high impact to the body than kickboxing or Judo making it suitable for older people, although make no mistake, if you confuse gentle with ineffective you will be finding yourself very much mistaken.

As our name would suggest Jiu Jitsu is our core martial art at HALO however we have solid credentials in several others and members who are experienced in wrestling, MMA and many striking martial arts too!

MMA BASICS – Utilising techniques from Muay Thai, Boxing and Chinese Boxing, wrestling and Jiu Jitsu, we are offering foundation techniques for the popular sport of Mixed Martial Arts.

KIDS Program – At this moment Kids can join specific classes of either of the above depending on age. MMA requires 11+, BJJ we have classes from 9+ however there are restrictions on the times. Please see the timetable

When comparing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) and grappling-based martial arts with striking-based disciplines like boxing and Muay Thai, it’s essential to recognize the distinct benefits each offers. Striking arts excel in developing explosive power, agility, and conditioning through rigorous training in punches, kicks, and footwork. This focus on striking techniques can be advantageous in self-defense scenarios where quick, decisive action is required to neutralize threats.

Conversely, BJJ and grappling arts prioritise ground-based techniques, joint locks, and submission holds, emphasising leverage and technique over brute force. This approach not only cultivates physical strength and flexibility but also sharpens mental acuity through strategic problem-solving on the mat. Moreover, the controlled nature of grappling reduces the risk of traumatic injury compared to the impact-heavy nature of striking arts, making it accessible to practitioners of all ages and fitness levels.

In terms of social benefits, both disciplines foster a strong sense of community and camaraderie among practitioners. Whether through sparring sessions, competitions, or belt promotions, students bond over shared experiences and mutual support, forming lasting friendships along the way.

Ultimately, whether one chooses BJJ or striking-based martial arts depends on individual preferences, goals, and inclinations. Each discipline offers a unique pathway to physical fitness, mental resilience, self-defence proficiency, and social connection, allowing practitioners to find their own path within the diverse landscape of martial arts.
