Whilst I’ve been using this effective and simple guard pass for many years it was quite funny to discover I had no idea what to call it. So I called my old friend and BJJ Black Belt Pete Irving who after a little thought came out with the Money Pass apparently coined by Rickson Gracie in the famous BJJ film Choke.
Of the many passing options this is a consistent and powerful technique which often ensues from a starting position of a closed guard. The reason so many white belts become acquainted with it is due to poorly executed triangle choke attempted which in turn leads to offering up this pass. Indeed this is the way I initially teach it.
However after searching on YouTube for a few decent video examples it was clear there are as many opinions on the best point to teach this one from as there are BJJ instructors, what’s more no one appears to know what the name of the pass is either but I’m still going with Pete’s “Money Pass” which I’m sure we both learned back in the day with Dave “Speedy” Elliot. The other popular names for it are Double Under pass and the Smash pass.
So the first version I found on YouTube was by Jeff Glover who named it the “Double under pass” but on examination from the pass itself it was the same one.
Personally I prefer to take the opposite collar than the grip Jeff takes but the mechanics are the same.

The second version I found was by good old Chewjitsu, I couldn’t find the guys actual name but I’ve watched many of his YouTube vids and generally find them entertaining. Check out his channel! This is the closest version to the way I was originally taught. This video is clearly a very old as Chewy himself looks about 19 on it but the pass is legit!

There are multiple small variations of this pass but the principle is simple. Scoop both legs at once, stack your opponent and utilise diagonal pressure to get to side mount.
It’s a must know pass for both gi and no gi Jiu Jitsu!
